Headteacher's Welcome

Welcome Everyone!

We have had a great first week back in school. The Year 1 and Year 2 children have settled back brilliantly into their new classes - they have been working very hard. We have been so impressed by their independence and confidence with tackling new routines and ways of working in their new classes. They have come in through the main gate so well; please continue to encourage this independence - an adult will be there to help if there are any wobbles!

A special welcome too to our new Reception children and their families! The children have done so well coming into school for the first time. We never underestimate what a big step this is for children (and their families!) and we are so proud of how grown up and independent the children have been this week. They have enjoyed learning and playing in their classrooms, making new friends, playtime outside in the big playground and having lunch in the hall. It has also been lovely to meet some of our new Preschool children visiting today - they all looked like they were having a lovely time exploring in their Caterpillars classroom.

We will send a very brief email on a Monday with the key information for each week.

Parent School Partnership

There are lots of things that parents and carers can do do help us to keep our school a happy, safe place for everyone.

Here are a few requests from us...

1) Please remember our school is a mobile free-zone - this means no phones should be used in the school grounds (this includes the playground). This is for safeguarding reasons.

2) WhatsApp groups have been set up in many classes by parents - these are a great way to stay in touch, plan social events and remind each other of events that are taking place in school. Please do not use these to discuss any issues or concerns you have about school or things that have happened in school; please come and talk to us if you have any worries about anything. WhatsApp is not the appropriate forum to do this and it can end up causing unnecessary anxiety for parents. If you are not on the class WhatsApp yet - chat to other parents at pick up and someone will be able to help.

3) Dogs - we understand with busy lives combining the school run with a dog walk can be helpful, however we ask that you keep dogs away from the steps up to the main gate and the ramp up to Preschool. However lovely your dog may be, some children are frightened and to them some of dogs feel very big!

4) Please ensure your child arrives on time. The main gate will close just before 8:55am to ensure children are in class ready for register at 8:55am. Phonics is the first lesson of the day - this is where we teach your child to be an amazing reader! Being late is unsettling for your child and means they will miss very important learning too. The Preschool gate will open at 8:30am and will close at 8:40am when the main gate opens.

5) Please read all communication that comes home - this will keep you informed about everything that is happening.

Wrap Around Care

Please book in advance where possible - this helps us to ensure safe staffing levels. All bookings are made via ParentPay.

Preschool must book at least 7 days in advance so that we can ensure we meet legal requirements on staffing.

Please collect all children from extra-curricular clubs at 4:20pm from the main gate at the front of school.

There is one place available in Forest School - if your child would like this place please phone the school office.

There are a few places available in other clubs - please book via ParentPay.

Allergies in School

We have a number of children in school who have severe allergies. Please do not send any products to school containing nuts. This includes cereal bars, biscuits, peanut butter sandwiches etc

We have noticed some children bringing snacks to school this week containing nuts e.g. Nutella sandwiches, almond croissants. All children are given a piece of fruit for snack in the morning - they may bring an alternative fruit / veg snack but we request that you do not send any other food for snack time.

Encouraging your child to wash their hands regularly, including before school can also reduce the risk of a reaction.

We are just finalising the parent calendar for this year. There are a few dates coming up for you to note:-

Tues 8th Sep - 9:00am Y1 & Y2 Class Parent Meetings: Elephants, Turtles, Kangaroos & Penguins (see below)

Fri 11th Sep - Butterflies Y1 & Y2 trip to EIS

Fri 25th Sept - First Friendly Friday (Y1 & Y2 only)

Notes from the Teachers

Year 1 and 2 Parent Meetings Next Week - Tues 8th Sep

This will be an opportunity for parents to find out details about your child's time in their new class including the structure of the day, what they need to bring, homework, PE and Woodland days etc.

Arrangements for the Meetings

Please drop off your child as normal at the main gate between 8:40am and 8:55am.
Once all of the children are in school and have been registered, parents will be invited to come in via the main gate and go into classrooms. You may send a grandparent / other carer if you are unable to attend but please only one adult per child as meetings will be held in classrooms and there is limited space.
The meetings will last 20-30 minutes. Please note this is an opportunity to find out general expectations for this coming year in your child's new class.
Information shared will be put onto the school website after the meetings for those who are unable to attend.

Contact with Teachers

If you need to contact your child's class teacher you may email them using the class email which is the name of the class as follows e.g. bears@nethergreen-inf.sheffield.sch.uk, koalas@nethergreen-inf.sheffield.sch.uk etc

Please do not expect an immediate response as teachers are teaching all day and are not expected to reply to emails during evenings and weekends. For a quick chat you can wait at the end of the day. For urgent messages please contact the school office.

Welcome back! We hope you’ve all had a wonderful summer and made the most of the glorious weather!

The children have hopefully enjoyed being back at school, seeing their friends and settling into their new classes.

The PTA are looking forward to getting started and planning another year of events. Our first meeting of the new school year is on Tuesday, 22nd September at 7.45pm at The Florentine. We’re particularly keen to welcome some new members this year, as several of our previous members have now moved up to the Juniors. If you’re able to get involved, even occasionally, please do come along – we’d love to see you there!

Looking forward to seeing everyone and getting the new year underway.

Reminder about DFE Attendance Guidance

As you may be aware school attendance has become a national issue in the last few years.

The DFE have implemented statutory guidance to encourage children to attend school as often as possible.

Children are expected to attend school every day unless they are too unwell to be in school or there is an exceptional circumstance.

Last year the DFE brought in stricter rules about school absence. What this means in practice is:-

increased fines for parents taking children out of school during term time for holidays
closer monitoring and potential prosecution for irregular attendance - 10 unauthorised absences within 10 weeks (1 absence = 1/2 a day)

We were really pleased that last year the majority of parents worked with us in partnership to ensure their child was in school as much as possible - this meant we ended the year with 97% attendance which is higher that the Sheffield and National averages.

What this means for parents:-

Please report absence by 9:00am every morning by phoning or emailing the school office
Term time holidays will not be authorised and the Local Authority will fine parents
Parents can be fined for 10 sessions unauthorised absence during a 10 week period - 1 session = a morning or afternoon
Staff will ask for evidence of medical appointments e.g. a letter or text message
