Headteacher's Welcome

Happy New Year!

I hope you have all had a lovely break and enjoyed the festive season. The children have certainly come back happy and rested.

At the beginning of a new year we often think about things that we could change, improve or do better.  You may be aware that, nationally, attendance in schools has declined over the past couple of years. This has affected Sheffield and our school too.

We would like to encourage all children to attend school as often as possible and to arrive at school on time. Learning is sequential and builds up over time - missing chunks of learning puts a child at a disadvantage. Similarly, arriving late in the morning means that children miss parts of their learning.  All of our children start Phonics at 9:00 am - this is where we teach children the essential skills they need to be confident readers and writers. If your child is late to this session they miss critical learning - it also disrupts the class when they come in late and occupies the office team at an already busy time of the day.

As a school we monitor attendance closely - we look at patterns in attendance and lateness and we have to share our data with the Local Authority Attendance Officer who supports school to improve attendance. We will also write to parents to let them know if we have concerns about their child's individual attendance. We fully appreciate that young children can be poorly and sometimes they need to be at home to rest, get better and avoid infecting others. We also know that sometimes this can be a difficult decision to make in the morning - if ever you are unsure whether to bring your child do contact school and we'd be happy to chat it through with you.

As we start a new year, please could we encourage you to support your child's learning by:-

  • Attending school as often as possible.
  • Arriving at school before 8:55am.
  • Not booking holidays during term time.

Happy New Year! We're excited for the term ahead as our new wellbeing garden is taking shape so the children should be able to really enjoy it come the Spring. You can find more details in the poster.

Thanks to all those who came to - and who shared news of - our Christmas Tree Recycling Event last weekend. Together with Nether Green Juniors we raised £640 which will be split across the two schools. A great way to kick start the year.
Our next meeting is this Tuesday, 16th January, 7:45pm at The Florentine. We'll be planning events for this term plus looking ahead to the school disco and summer fair! We'd love you to see you there. Please do also get in touch if you have any ideas or any little bit of time to share.
In the meantime, if you have any duplicate or unwanted gifts you'd be willing to donate, please hand them into the office. They'll make great prizes for upcoming events. Likewise, if you have any small leftover party bag bits, please consider donating them or keeping them ready for our summer fair treasure jars. It's such a favourite for the kids it would be great to have lots on offer!
Here's also a little reminder of the other simple ways you can support the school:
- Your School Lottery: For every ticket bought, 74% goes towards the school and prizes. There's a winner from NGIS every draw plus a chance to win the big £25K jackpot: Your School Lotttery
- Easyfundraising: 7000+ brands including M&S, Mountain Warehouse & John Lewis donate every time you use easyfundraising to shop with them. It takes seconds to sign up so please consider registering as it could help raise money at no cost to you!
Amazon Wishlist: Thank you so much to all those who donated last term, it is hugely appreciated by the staff and kids. We'll keep sharing it as it's updated throughout the year.

The Big Ambition - Survey
Deadline extended to 19th January 2024
We have been contacted by the Children's Commissioner for England Dame Rachel De Souza and asked to share this survey with parents.
Message from the commisioner...

'I want to ensure that the voices of all children in the Yorkshire and the Humber area are fairly represented in the findings so that I can share their views with the most senior members of the country.

I must reiterate that it is vital that all children have their voice heard through this survey because, as Children’s Commissioner for England, I have a statutory duty to protect and promote the views and interests of children. The Big Ambition provides a much-needed opportunity for the children of England to tell political decision makers what is important to them ahead of the General Election. I will be sharing their responses with Government to ensure that children’s voices are heard.'
